A client came to us and asked us to plan exterior and interior renovations of their central Vermont home. (We collaborated with Ward Joyce Design) Their current deck, an original part of the house, didn't fit their needs for entertaining family and friends while enjoying superlative mountain views. We developed a design which sought to tie together nearby outside spaces of their yard including a fire circle, planted areas, and open lawn for games.
We codesigned the deck at an angle to provide a more generous space for family entertaining, cookouts with a narrowed area towards the front using the architectural lines of the deck to focus on the view beyond. The deck also tied into an existing deck fronting the home enhancing connectivity around the front of the house and the primary entry side. Future plans call for adding a small stair off the front porch to tie into the driveway parking area with its primary entry. Also, a Kitchen renovation may be in the works.
Here are some small details of the construction showing smaller areas of the deck. To maintain openness the homeowner chose to have a very simple railing built with no horizontal wire cabling or wood balustered barriers. We advocate at all times adding these safety features at time of construction and not waiting for the future sale of the home when home inspection reports will show the need to complete the work. That said, we hope this family enjoys using their deck for years to come through the magical seasons Vermont has to offer.
